| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit aims to enable students to apply the theory and concepts covered in ECN2217 to study real world issues. The topics covered include: 1. Python and Google Colab 2. Supply and demand I (US Sugar Program) 3. Supply and demand II (taxes in the housing market) 4. Competitive and monopsonistic markets (minimum wage) 5. Market power and firm behaviour (competition policy) 6. Oligopoly (mergers) 8. Auctions (tax competition) Study-Unit Aims: It aims to show students how individuals, businesses and public sector employees can use the analytical tools of microeconomics to analyse real world issues. Utilizing Python a programming language for building and executing theoretical models as well as testing them with data students will engage in hands-on learning experiences. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand how the supply and demand framework can be applied to study real world issues; - Understand how knowledge of different types of market structures can be utilised to gain insights about the functioning of markets. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Enable students to apply microeconomics tools; - Introduce students to the use of Python for building and testing theoretical models; and - Improve students' critical analysis skills. Textbook: - Hall, R.E. and Lieberman, M. (2012) Microeconomics: Principles and Applications, 6th Edition, South-Western Cengage Learning. - Varian, H.R. (2014). Intermediate Microeconomics: A modern approach, 9th Edition, WW Norton & Co. USA. Additional reading material will be provided throughout the course. |
